How to Make Your Fresh Flowers Last Longer: Florist-Approved Tips

Getting a bouquet of fresh flowers is lovely, but without proper care, cut flowers can quickly wilt and lose their charm. However, with a few simple steps, you can extend the life of your flowers and enjoy them for longer.

1. Start with a clean vase

Always start with a super-clean vase to prevent bacterial growth, which can shorten the lifespan of your flowers. Fill it with fresh water and add flower food if provided. This nourishes the flowers and helps prevent decay.

2. Trim the stems

Before arranging your flowers, trim about an inch off the stems at a 45-degree angle. Cutting at an angle increases the surface area for water absorption. Re-trim stems every few days to keep them hydrated. Remove any leaves that fall below the water line to prevent bacterial growth.

3. Find their happy place

Place your vase away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and drafts. Flowers last longer in cooler areas. Also, avoid placing them near ripening fruits, as the ethylene gas released can cause premature wilting.

4. Change the Water Regularly

Refresh the water every 2–3 days, cleaning the vase and adding new flower food (if you have). This simple step keeps bacteria at bay and ensures your flowers stay vibrant for longer.

5. Remove Wilted Flowers

Regularly check your bouquet and remove any flowers that are starting to wilt. This prevents the spread of decay and allows the remaining blooms to thrive.

If you follow these simple tips, your cut flowers will stay fresh, vibrant, and fragrant for as long as possible. A little care goes a long way in keeping blooms beautiful.
